Survivalist and nature enthusiasts alike know that the most important item you can have in an emergency survival situation is water. However, what are the damaging effects that dehydration can cause?

And more importantly, how does water help humans survive, how much water do you need and what other factors besides water effect hydration?

The human body is comprised of 75% water, so it’s not surprising that if you don’t drink enough water, things start to go bad. And in a survival situation where you are active, you are constantly losing water through perspiration, urination, defecation and even when you exhale a breath.

When 5% of body weight in water is lost (9lbs of fluid loss for a 180lbs person), symptoms of dehydration start to get extreme. Your heart rate, body temperature and respiration will increase, while your body functions like sweating and urinating will decrease, making it even more difficult to cool down. Other symptoms at this level of dehydration include terrible cramping, nausea and even vomiting.

Dehydration becomes a medical emergency at a loss of 10% of body fluids or more (18lbs of fluid loss for a 180lbs person). Symptoms at this level of dehydration include painful muscle spasms and your blood pressure will plummet while your heart rate will increase to try to compensate for the low blood pressure. You’ll also start to feel lethargic and confused and even more extreme, your skin will start to shrivel. It will become painful to urinate and breathe, seizures will begin, followed by passing out. Finally your organs will start to shut down and heart failure may ensue.

Water is crucial to the human body and has many functions. The most important role of water is in homeostasis or keeping your body in equilibrium, such as maintaining a constant body temperature (98.6 F) by sweating when hot or shivering when your body is cold. Homeostasis also occurs in your body’s cells.

Along with electrolytes (positive ions; Sodium, Potassium and Chloride) in your bloodstream, water maintains a balance in your cells, by moving nutrients across cell walls and into the cell. It also helps remove toxins from, filtered by your kidneys from your body.

When dehydration occurs, the serum (or non-cellular) part of the blood decreases making it more difficult for blood to circulate and harder for cells to get vital nutrients.

Some might quote their Grandma and tell you to drink 8, 8 oz glasses of water per day, however no foundation for this standard has ever been found*, and furthermore, hydration requirements change in different conditions. A person working hard in the hot desert would require more water than a person in a temperate climate zone kicking back.

Doctors recommend listening to your body and drinking water when you feel thirsty. Furthermore, research shows that a water load that is ingested over a 15 minute period is excreted quicker than if a water load is ingested over a longer period of 2.5 hours where the water was mostly retained*.

In a survival situation, natural disaster or even hard times – the most important item you can have is water. Without water health risks and even death may come on suddenly. However, if you pay attention to your body’s need and stay hydrated, your body will cool itself and maintain a healthy equilibrium ensuring survival and a happy body.

We know it’s important to drink plenty of water to survive, but where does one find water in survival situations? Join us for part 2 - “How to Find the Water You Need to Survive”, where we will explore finding water in survival situations.
